Ascetical Homily 69 in the Greek Manuscripts

Ascetical Homily 69 in Sinai Greek MS 406.

The text of the title, if not the extent of it as title, matches that in Bedjan’s Syriac text and Vatican Syriac 124. It is set off from the text of the Homily by red ink and the large capital kappa that opens the homily. The first sentence of the homily begins with the same phrase our English edition does, “How often certain persons transgress . . .”

Note that the phrase “kai mian,” crossed out in red pencil, was mistakenly written thrice instead of twice.

The images of Sinai Greek MSS 406 and 409 shown at left are used by permission of Saint Catherine’s Monastery, Sinai, Egypt. These images are licensed for use on this website only; further use of them is forbidden without the prior written permission of St. Catherine’s

Ascetical Homily 69 in Sinai Greek MS 409.

The text of the title, if not the extent of it as title, matches that in Bedjan’s Syriac text and Vatican Syriac 124, and Sinai 406 shown above, and begins as Sinai 406 and our English edition do.

The title begins at the bottom of the verso page above and ends on the recto page below; it is not even given a new line but begins right after the “Amen” of the previous homily.

It is set off from the text of the Homily by red ink and the large ornate capital kappa that opens the homily.

Vatican Syriac 124, shown next, takes the incorporation of title into text a step further.
